Maxims of Teaching

 MAXIMS OF TEACHING

Maxims of teaching are general psychological which serve as a rule or teach or guideline in the process of teaching. These rules are used for presenting difficult terms and concepts to make them easy to comprehend in the classroom teaching. Through this the students get more involved and interested in classroom teaching. These maxims are used by the teacher to create and sustain interest and attention of the students in what he or she is learning.
Maxims of teaching motivate the learners and also make teaching learning process effective, fruitful, inspirational and meaningful. A good teacher should know when and how to use the maxim appropriately for the effective classroom and involvement of the students.

The four important maxims are-

  1. Known to Unknown
  2. Simple to Complex
  3. Concrete to Abstract
  4. Particular to General
Lets look into these four maxims more deeply.

  1. KNOWN TO UNKNOWN

  • It is based on the Apperceive Mass Theory of learning.
  • Here, learning of old things is connected with the new things.
  • The teacher should connect the new matter with the old.
  • New knowledge cannot be grasped in a vacuum.

      2. SIMPLE TO COMPLEX

  • Teacher should start with simple things and ideas.
  • After simple ideas, then move towards complex things.
  • This will help the students in better understanding of the concepts.
  • Through this they will be able to learn and retain it well.

    3. CONCRETE TO ABSTRACT

  • Things come first and words after.
  • Here, imagination of the student should be fired up with concrete material.
  • Sense organs must be employed as students cannot think in abstractions.

    4. PARTICULAR TO GENERAL

  • It is otherwise known as inductive to deductive.
  • Here, through the active participation, the learner moves from particular examples to general rules.
  • New knowledge is the result of induction.

     CONCLUSION

Thus, maxims are the technique of teaching which a teacher uses during teaching learning process to make the learning effective. Maxims help in the active involvement of the students. without the use of maxims a teacher cannot teach effectively and interestingly.
